- OpenAI reduces Sora video generations to 6 generations for free users
- Google lowered limits for free users of Gemini 3 Pro
- Nano Banana Pro’s image generation limitations have also been reduced
If you’re using Sora or Gemini 3 Pro on the free plan, things get a little tougher. OpenAI and Google have quietly reduced the number of prompts, videos, and images free users can generate as demand soars and GPU costs soar.
That means fewer visits than a week ago.
Here’s what’s happening: OpenAI limits access to its AI video generation tool, Sora 2, to six generations per day for free users. Google has also removed the 5 prompts per day promise on Gemini 3 Pro and reduced image generation. Nano Banana Pro is reduced to 2 per day for free users.
“My GPU has melted!”
Bill Peebles, head of Sora at OpenAI, tweeted: “As GPUs start to melt, we want to make Sora accessible to as many people as possible.” He also said, “We will set a usage limit for free users to six generations per day.”
Set usage limit for free users to 6 generations per day. Limits for chatgpt plus and pro users remain unchanged and anyone can purchase additional gens if needed. Our GPUs are melting, so we want to make sora accessible to as many people as possible.November 28, 2025
The “GPU melting” line refers to the huge computing demands caused by Sora video. Video and image generation consumes much more power than text, so limiting the number of videos that free users can create should result in some downtime for OpenAI’s servers.
Limits for ChatGPT Plus and Pro users remain unchanged, with Peebles saying that “everyone can purchase additional generations if needed.” Of course, paying for Video Generation isn’t appealing to those on the free plan.
Gemini 3 Pro limitations
But now, Google has announced through a support article that it will be changing prompt assignments for Gemini Pro. The daily prompt number is no longer displayed, and instead it says that free users “get basic access – daily limits may change frequently.” Image generation and editing using Nano Banana Pro is now fixed at 2 images per day.
If you’re on a Google AI plan, nothing changes. Google AI Pro displays up to 100 prompts per day, and Google AI Ultra displays up to 500 prompts per day.
gentle nudge
The simultaneous crackdown by Google and OpenAI may be a coincidence, but it could also be an early sign that the maturing AI industry is grappling with the massive computing costs required to generate prompts, images, and videos.
I wouldn’t be surprised if we see more of these little nudges to push people into paid plans over the next year, as business models start to catch up to the reality of the costs of running a modern AI website.
The market may be changing as demand explodes, GPUs heat up, and AI companies gently nudge us into the paid tier. AI tools aren’t going away, but the days of generous free access to top-of-the-line models may be over.
