NoteBookLM has added a new feature called “Video Overview,” which uses AI to present complex information in a more accessible visual format.

This feature automatically generates slides with voiceover and draws images, charts, quotes and numbers directly from the file. According to Google's official NoteBookLM blog, ideas are useful for breaking down abstract concepts and explaining complex processes in step-by-step format.

The video overview acts as a visual companion to the audio overview and offers similar options for customization. Users can set learning goals, specify target audiences, and highlight specific topics. The tool responds to extensive prompts such as “I'm not familiar with the topic – help me understand the illustrations,” but also handles detailed instructions from expert audiences. The deployment is launched for all English users, with more languages planned.

Google has also rebuilt the studio panels for Notebooklm. Instead of being limited to one studio output per type, users can now store multiple outputs of the same type in a single notebook. This means you can create a summary of several mind maps or videos for different sections of the course, or tailor content for different team roles.

The updated studio panel features four tiles for audio overview, video overview, mind maps and reports, all content organized into one list below: Audio overviews can now be played in the background while working in other formats.

Notebooklm recently added a curated collection of public notebooks featuring content from the Atlantic, economists and a variety of nonprofit organizations. Users can access original text, question tools, audio overviews, and mind maps. Google says that more than 140,000 public notebooks have been published since its launch.

It is still unclear how Google will ultimately get NotebookLM. The company is already competing with ChatGpt with the chamini chatbot, and Gemini models with search-oriented features like AI mode are built into Google Search. For now, Notebooklm is focused on helping users use their own source materials. This is a niche that I think will be particularly useful for teaching and learning.
