No glasses needed: Chinese team uses AI to create wide-angle 3D screens – Technology

Applications of AI

Chinese researchers at the Shanghai Institute of AI and Fudan University have developed a system that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to create glasses-free 3D visuals on a desktop-sized screen, marking a major advance in display technology.

The system, called EyeReal, uses artificial intelligence (AI) to create glasses-free 3D visuals on a desktop-sized screen, overcoming a decades-old challenge in consumer electronics, according to a paper recently published in Nature.

EyeReal provides a 100 degree field of view with Full HD resolution. This allows viewers to move around naturally while maintaining the vivid 3D effects that were only possible with much smaller displays and limited viewing angles with previous technology.

The researchers employed an AI-powered approach that tracks eye movements and dynamically optimizes a simple image of three standard LCD panels stacked together, which could be suitable for future consumer applications.

The display offers a high resolution of 1,920 plus 1,080 with a refresh rate of more than 50 frames per second, providing smooth and natural visuals, the research paper notes.

“Our device has the potential to enable applications in educational tools, 3D design, and virtual reality,” the researchers said.
