National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar on Friday signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Shell Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (Skim) Sora. This collaboration is to promote collaboration between machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance diagnosis, treatment planning and clinical decision-making.

This demonstrates the strategic convergence of engineering and medical science, with both institutions working to create a structured ethical framework for AI applications in healthcare. It also outlines several key areas of collaboration that pave the way for local data-driven healthcare innovation.

The MOU was signed in front of representatives from both agencies. Nit Srinagar was represented by Hod Ece, Nit, Dr. Gausia Qazi and Dr. Gr Beigh (Associate Dean R&C, NIT). Dr. Yusra Banday (Project Supervisor, NIT), and AR (Director's Office & Legal, NIT), Mohamad Hazik.

In his message, Professor Binod Kumar Kanaujia, director of NIT Srinagar, said that the Mou is marking a milestone in bringing together two of the best institutions to tackle the intersection of health and technology.

“Advances in AI and machine learning have tools that will revolutionize the way healthcare is delivered. This partnership will enable students to build impactful solutions rooted in real-world medical challenges,” he added.

On this occasion, Professor M. Ashraf Ganie, Director of Skims and EOSG, said this partnership with NIT Srinagar will pave the way for data-driven and evidence-based medicine.

“By combining clinical expertise and innovation, we hope to accelerate the development of diagnostic tools and improve patient care for common diseases, especially in the Kashmir region. This is a major leap into personalized predictive medicine,” he said.

“We have a lot of data and we want to use that real data for the benefit of society. MOU will focus on a wider range of fields such as genomics, telemedicine, bioinformatics, and public health analysis, allowing for deeper integration of technology into medicine,” he added.

Dr. Gausia Qazi of Hod Ece nit Srinagar said the Mou is an important step in filling the gap between healthcare and advanced engineering.

“Our department is committed to leveraging artificial intelligence and machine learning to address real-world medical challenges. We look forward to providing cutting-edge solutions that can support physicians, improve diagnosis and ultimately enhance patient care,” she said.

Meanwhile, Kamran Ali Hussain, an eighth semester student in the Electronics Communications Engineering department at NIT Srinagar, gave an impressive presentation during the Mou event on a project entitled “AI-led Web Platform for Early Detecting PCOS Risk Assessment in Women in Kashmir.”

The project demonstrated the practical application of machine learning for early detection of PCOD in women and was widely praised for its innovation and relevance.

Professor M. Ashraf Ganie, director of Skims and Eosg, praised the project team for their efforts and assured them full support from Skim on future student-led initiatives.

According to the MOU, Skim will provide NIT Srinagar with ethically approved anonymized clinical data for research purposes. This data is used solely to develop predictive analytics models aimed at identifying pathological patterns and early warning signs.

NIT Srinagar develops advanced machine learning algorithms to analyze shared medical datasets. The main objective is to improve clinical decision-making, enable early diagnosis, and create personalized treatment models. This study also contributes to better resource optimization in healthcare settings.

Both institutions are actively involved in the publication of findings in peer-reviewed scientific journals and present them at national and international conferences.

The interdisciplinary nature of this collaboration reflects both engineering and medical perspectives in research results, fostering an environment of mutual learning and innovation.

The MOU also aims to develop scalable models for applying AI and machine learning to various medical fields such as Skims and NIT Srinagar, and to build a collaborative knowledge base to support future healthcare innovations.

It also aims to promote an ongoing environment of innovation in medical practices and research that benefit the patient care and healthcare community.
