The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) plans to introduce artificial intelligence (AI)-based in-vehicle camera surveillance systems across around 40,000 km of the national highway network, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways said on Friday.
The system, called Dashcam Analytics Services (DAS), uses AI and machine learning tools to support highway and highway operations and maintenance.
The initiative involves installing dashboard cameras on Route Patrol Vehicles (RPVs) to conduct weekly inspections of highway sections. The system captures high-resolution image and video data for remote monitoring and road condition assessment.
AI models are used to identify over 30 types of defects and anomalies. These include not only pavement-related issues such as potholes, ruts, and cracks, but also road infrastructure issues such as lane markings, crash barriers, and street lights.
The system also monitors safety-related concerns such as illegal median openings, unauthorized signage, trespassing, and improper parking.
Emphasis on safety and maintainability
NHAI said at least one survey will be conducted at night every month to assess the condition of road signs, lighting and pavement markings. Other maintenance issues will also be noted, such as stagnant water, missing drainage covers, vegetation growth, and the condition of the bus bay. To manage the data, the authorities plan to divide the country into five zones and use a dedicated IT platform with modules for data management, analysis and visual dashboards. The system also allows you to compare road conditions over time and track maintenance progress.
The data generated by the AI will be integrated into NHAI’s central data platform to support monitoring and timely repairs, the ministry said.
This implementation aims to improve monitoring and maintenance processes through a data-driven approach. According to the ministry, the use of AI-based dashcam systems is expected to support timely problem identification and improve road safety across the national highway network.
