Media Personality and Mathematics With Adam Spencer will celebrate National Science Week this month by drawing artificial intelligence under a microscope in Newcastle.
The former Triple J presenter and comedian headlines the City of Newcastle's packed event program. This begins with Spencer's technology talk at City Hall on August 15th, culminating in a practical weekend of scientific discoveries at the Newcastle Museum.
Mayor Ross Kelridge said hosting famous science communicators like Adam Spencer reflects Newcastle's reputation as an innovation and learning destination.
“We welcome nationally recognized speakers such as Adam Spencer, who decodes AI and other emerging technologies, and provide engaging learning opportunities for all ages,” says Cr Kerridge.
“Newcastle is a creative and innovative city, home to the cutting edge of their field with world-class researchers and scientists.
“Working with these experts to provide hands-on events at the museum will inspire the next generation of innovators.”
Tickets for the Spencer show are currently on sale. This breaks down the basics of AI for viewers over 10, delve into the latest developments, and provides eight examples of how Novocastrians can use these technologies today.
Scienceful fun continues all weekend at the Newcastle Museum, with a super Saturday of soccer-playing robots, sustainable architecture and computer science skills thanks to technology and education expert The Brainery. Tickets for various workshops are currently on sale, with various sessions suitable for elementary and high school senior students.
Younger children also welcome the return of The Poo Palace. This is an incredible inflatable journey through the digestive system provided by the Hunter Medical Institute (HMRI) that is available throughout the weekend.
The Newcastle Museum concludes the Science Week celebration and will be its biggest day event at its annual calendar, Hunter Science Festival. This is expected to attract thousands of visitors to free, all-age practical activities on Sunday, August 17th.
The festival is provided by the city of Newcastle in collaboration with a variety of partners, including Hunter Innovation and Science Hub (HISH), and introduces the latest science and technology from local researchers, educators and institutions.
Julie Baird, director of museums, archives, libraries and learning in the city of Newcastle, said bringing Science Week to Newcastle is an opportunity to inspire curiosity that could last a lifetime.

Festival audiences can explore solar technology by building and racing solar cars and boats, or catching the great fun of big science! Show by Fizzics Education. You will have the opportunity to meet and chat with Hunter scientists and interact with displays hosted by major hunter-based groups such as Irukanji Shark and the Ray Center, the Hunter Astronomical Society and more.
The City of Newcastle Waste Services, Climate Change and Sustainability Team helps visitors calculate their environmental footprint, receive free native plants, and look inside their garbage trucks.
