New US schools will use AI as teachers, humans will only assist students in workshops

Applications of AI

Alpha School plans to open a new school in the United States around November. It will be an AI-powered school, but it won’t be what many people expect. The school does not intend to focus on teaching artificial intelligence as a subject. Instead, adults will remain in the classroom to guide students, while AI will be responsible for teaching students key academic subjects.

The Alpha School will open in the former GEMS Academy building on Chicago’s Lakeshore East. The school said its AI model teaches students about two hours of core academic subjects each day. The remaining time will be devoted to workshops, unique projects, and learning various life skills. The school also plans to replace traditional textbooks with software-based learning tools.

The school will initially enroll approximately 100 students in kindergarten through eighth grade, with plans to expand in the future. The annual membership fee is $55,000 (approximately Rs. 5,173,000). Alpha School currently has more than 20 locations across the United States. However, the high school program is limited to Austin, Texas.

In schools of the future, students will learn through the school’s AI platform on computers. The curriculum is a combination of school-developed software and licensed third-party educational apps such as Khan Academy, Membean, Mentava, and MobyMax.

How learning models work

School will proceed on a two-part schedule. The morning session will focus on academics, with students learning through AI-driven software. After lunch, students put away their laptops and move on to a hands-on workshop focused on life skills, teamwork, and project-based learning.

Mackenzie Price, the school’s co-founder, cited a survey of 1,000 K-12 students from 13 U.S. schools. According to the survey, 94% of students said they loved school, and 60% said they would rather go to school than go on vacation.

The school has drawn national attention and scrutiny to its model as questions remain about the effectiveness of AI-driven instruction. Although the use of AI in education has become increasingly common, with both teachers and students using AI tools, a curriculum taught entirely in AI is a new concept.

Meanwhile, Alpha School’s Cameron Thorsby recently announced a new program on X for students who want to become entrepreneurs. “Our Promise: Earn $1 Million” [roughly Rs 9.25 crore] Please give me a full refund of my tuition by the time I graduate,” Thorsby wrote.
