Energy Institute (ESI)
The Energy Research Institute (ESI) is a research institute of the National University of Singapore that aims to advance our understanding of energy policy issues by conducting independent research and analysis. We are looking for researchers to join our interdisciplinary team to conduct research projects on various energy issues of concern to Singapore and the region.
The institute seeks experts in statistics, computer science, or related fields, in particular researcher rank with experience applying artificial intelligence (AI) and/or machine learning (ML) tools. Appointed staff act under the responsibility of the Institute Director and work closely with members across the Institute’s divisions and various research programs.
Candidates are expected to be comfortable applying AI and ML techniques for data analysis and visualization. The range ranges from data/image classification tasks to language processing, prediction and prediction. Experience in implementing the latest computer science techniques and workflows to upgrade and optimize research output would be an advantage. It is desirable to understand Singapore’s economic system and have local work experience.
The initial term will be two years, with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance and financial position.

Depending on experience and rank:
- As a researcher, you will be expected to lead or support the development of project proposals.
- In addition to playing an active role in the preparation of project reports, you will also be expected to actively contribute your expertise to projects managed by other research staff within the Institute.
- Develop ideas for opportunities to integrate and complement computer science techniques (including AI and ML-based analytics) into existing research projects and present them to the Institute Director and Senior Research Staff (Department Heads).
- To collect, clean and analyze data across different projects. This may also include scanning and introducing datasets that may not yet be available or considered by existing researchers at ESI.
- We help you prepare and host public events such as workshops and conferences.
The specific areas of work will depend on the Institute’s priorities at the time.
requirements
- Master’s degree in computer science, data science, statistics, or other related field with at least two years of relevant work experience.
- Applicants must demonstrate experience in quantitative data analysis.
- Contemporary understanding and interest in energy and environmental issues.
- Related work and work experience in Singapore’s energy and environment industry or government agencies is invaluable.
- Having a track record of publication in reputable journals is an advantage.
- Able to work independently and as part of a team.
