The National AI Application Pilot Base (Medical Department) announced major step-by-step achievements in the city on Saturday, with five core technological innovations and nine cutting-edge medical smart applications released, promoting the high-quality development of China’s AI+ healthcare sector and providing intelligent medical services to the public.
Opened in 2025 and led by Zhongshan Hospital under the guidance of the national and local governments, the base has built an integrated pilot validation platform covering computing power, medical data, large-scale models, and clinical validation, laying a solid foundation for large-scale AI applications in clinical medicine.
These five breakthroughs target core challenges in the medical AI industry. Six vertical medical large models covering multiple clinical scenarios. National Empirical Medical AI Data Infrastructure. The world’s leading MedBench 4.0 Chinese medical large-scale model testing platform. and the transformation of laboratory technology into clinical applications.
The nine flagship applications cover clinical diagnostics, medical device research and development, AI drug discovery, and brain-computer interfaces. Highlights include Zhongshan Hospital’s “Guanxin” cardiovascular AI agent, Renji Hospital’s urology AI agent serving more than 500,000 patients, and Huashan Hospital’s invasive brain-computer interface device, which was the first in the world to receive China’s Class III medical device certification.
“Some applications have seen large-scale application. The hepatobiliary tumor AI agent has been used in 122 medical institutions covering more than 1 million people, and the chest image one-scan multi-diagnosis agent has processed more than 2.5 million cases in about 20 hospitals in the country, greatly improving medical efficiency and accurate medical care,” said Gu Jianying, pilot base director of Zhongshan Hospital.
On this day, the base signed cooperation agreements with four districts, eight research institutes, 28 hospitals and 20 high-tech enterprises in Shanghai, forming a government-industry-academia-research cooperation ecosystem.
In the future, the base will further drive performance transformation, build a global medical AI innovation hub, and inject technological thrust into the Healthy China initiative.
