Founder of Infosys NR Narayana Murthy dismisses the fear that artificial intelligence will eliminate employment, claiming instead that technology will create new types of employment opportunities and dramatically increase productivity across India's IT sector.Speaking to MoneyControl, the 78-year-old tech veteran emphasized that businesses should view AI as a support tool rather than an alternative to human workers. “This whole horror of technology taking away jobs is not right. It will create another kind of job,” Mercy said, similar to the introduction of computers in banking decades ago.
History shows growth in employment, not loss
Mercy cited the banking sector change in the 1970s as evidence that technological advancements create jobs rather than destroy them. “When the computers came to the banking department, everyone said, 'No, no, no, there's no work.' No – In the banking sector, we multiply jobs by a coefficient of 40-50,” he explained.The founder of Infosys revealed that his personal experience with ChatGpt revolutionized the efficiency of his work, reducing the preparation time for lectures from 25-30 hours to just five hours. “I've improved my productivity up to five times,” he pointed out, highlighting the possibilities of AI to enhance human capabilities rather than replacing them.
Future workforce focuses on complex problem solving
Looking ahead, Mercy envisions a transformed landscape where experts are tackling increasingly sophisticated challenges. “What will happen in the future is that our programmers and analysts will be smarter and smarter in defining better, more complex requirements. They will solve bigger, more complex problems,” he predicted.He emphasized that the key to leveraging AI is effective in asking the right questions and defining requirements accurately. “Smartness is in providing a definition of requirements…smartness is in asking the right questions,” observed Mercy.His optimistic outlook is firmly believed that “AI will increase the growth rate of industry” when used properly, as Indian IT industry is concerned about the impact of AI on employment.
