Prime Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has instructed the energy sector to adopt artificial intelligence (AI) in electricity demand forecasting and effectively use capacity planning tools to make accurate forecasts.
Addressing a review meeting on the Energy Portfolio Management System (EPMS) at the secretariat on Thursday, Naidu said that using AI and other emerging technologies would need to be used to adjust the generation and distribution plans to suit a variety of weather conditions.
He emphasized that he would properly analyze last year's electricity purchases and based on that, forecasting the requirements for the following year to manage sourcing from the open market.
Authorities told the Prime Minister that EPM has led to significant savings in Discom's electricity purchase costs, and efforts are underway to use AI and machine learning for demand and price forecasts, market analysis and bid management among other features. The Prime Minister ordered a focus on operating pumped hydroelectric and battery energy storage projects on a schedule.
Authorities have informed the Prime Minister that the total of 705 crores has been saved under the improved distribution sector scheme. Minister of Energy Gottipatiravikumar, K. Chief Vijayanand and other senior officials were present.
