The Government will continue to invest in AI as a way to improve the UK’s road and rail networks, according to the chair of the Transport Select Committee.
Ruth Cadbury, MP and chair of the committee, spoke in parliament alongside leaders from the transport and AI industries, praising existing uses of AI and partnerships with specialist providers to tackle issues such as potholes and train delays, and pointing out that more was to come.
In his talk, Cadbury demonstrated the Robotiz3d autonomous pothole detection, prevention and remediation technology system.
“Having a fully optimized transportation network supported by the latest digital capabilities is essential to delivering future economic growth,” commented event attendee Daren Wood, chief technology officer at rail technology provider Resonate Group.
“Britain’s roads and rail links act as vital national infrastructure that connects businesses and, in turn, helps create jobs and opportunities for the next generation.”
Fellow attendee Graham Stewart, Head of Public Sector at Check Point Software, added: “With AI set to play a key role in the future of the UK’s transport infrastructure, it is important that we put in place the necessary security safeguards to protect these operations from external threats.
“Policy makers who oversee our roads, rail and transportation systems need to remain vigilant because hackers have proven that nothing is off limits, whether it’s health services, schools or daycares.”
