Appian has rolled out a set of artificial intelligence capabilities designed to integrate AI agents into business processes and accelerate the modernization of legacy applications. The functionality of the new platform has already been validated in trials with enterprise customers, showing tangible results in operational automation and application development.
embedded agent
Core updates include incorporating AI agents directly into operational workflows using Agent Studio. These agents can interpret data, reason, respond to unexpected situations, and make decisions within enterprise processes. Business users can define the goals of these agents in natural language, reducing reliance on technical expertise and enabling them to operate with broader accessibility.
Appian’s AI agents inherit access to corporate data and adhere to process guardrails. This approach ensures that decisions are made based on full context and that agent behavior remains transparent and auditable. These enhancements enable organizations to automate complex tasks, interpret unstructured data sources, and adjust processes in real-time.
Customer trials reported widespread ease of use. 100% of beta program participants rated Agent Studio as “intuitive or very intuitive.”
“Appian continues to be more than a technology partner, we are an innovation ally. Agent Studio shows how AI and low-code can be combined to extend human capabilities in the ways that matter most: reaching families faster, reducing administrative friction, and freeing clinicians to focus on the best care,” said Ryan Cox, co-founder and vice president of Acclaim Autism. “Agent Studio bridges the gap between business users and software engineers. By uploading existing processes to the agent’s knowledge set, we quickly achieved reliable clinician-patient matching. This is powerful results from a simple setup.”
Legacy app modernization
Appian Composer is also available now and is intended to address the challenges of modernizing legacy applications. Composer allows users to turn ideas into live applications through an AI-guided interface. Build interactive plans for user stories, data, processes, and user experiences to generatively create applications that can be tailored to specific business needs.
During the trial, over 130 organizations built over 1,300 applications through Composer, demonstrating adoption across a variety of sectors. This tool is designed for collaboration between business, IT, and AI teams to streamline the process of app design and deployment.
Data platform upgrade
To support these AI and application development capabilities, Appian has enhanced its data fabric capabilities. The platform supports up to 50 million rows of data and delivers 5x faster write throughput than previous iterations. Enhanced security features include transparent data encryption to maintain compliance with information security requirements.
Governed AI integration
A recent MIT Project NANDA study highlighted that most generative AI integrations within enterprise environments do not provide meaningful benefits. Appian’s integration of AI agents into managed workflows appears to address many of the limitations identified by research, particularly the frequent challenge of context variability that confounds standalone AI systems.
“Many organizations were deploying inefficient and expensive standalone AI chatbots to their back-office operations teams,” said Michael Beckley, CTO at Appian. “MIT research shows that this approach fails 95% of the time because AI itself is easily confused by different data contexts. Appian takes a fundamentally different path. We embed specialized AI agents directly within operational workflows, delivering reliable results at scale and enabling real-world outcomes, such as accurately processing tens of millions of insurance quotes per year for a single customer.”
