Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One‘s AI villain and its origins take center stage in a new video with comments from director Christopher McQuarrie. Tom Cruise returns as superspy Ethan Hunt in the seventh installment of the long-running action franchise. The latest sequel sees Hunt facing off against a rogue AI threat known as The Entity and its human emissary, Gabriel (Esai Morales).

Now, a new video shared by Paramount Pictures on YouTube digs into McQuarrie’s creation of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One‘s AI villain. Check out the new featurette below:

The video features McQuarrie discussing his original conception of a villain based in information technology back in the mid-2010s when he first joined the franchise. By the time Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One was in post-production, the director explains, The Entity very chillingly started to feel closer to science fact than science fiction.

The Entity Is Mission: Impossible’s Most Dangerous Villain Yet

The Entity in Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Part 1

Over the course of the first six Mission: Impossible movies, Ethan faces off against a variety of formidable antagonists. Philip Seymour Hoffman’s Owen Davian in Mission: Impossible 3 remains perhaps the most threatening thus far, but both Henry Cavill’s August Walker and Sean Harris’ Solomon Lane were also very memorable. The Entity, however, is already the most dangerous threat Cruise’s hero has ever come up against.

As Cary Elwes’ character says in the film, The Entity is “everywhere and nowhere” making it exceedingly hard to kill. It especially handicaps characters like Simon Pegg’s Benji and Ving Rhames Luther, who often rely on technology to do their jobs and support Ethan. As seen in one of Mission: Impossible 7‘s most chilling moments, The Entity can even impersonate the voices of Ethan’s team members in order to sabotage him, which even leads to the death of Rebecca Ferguson’s Ilsa.

Ilsa’s Mission: Impossible 7 death is the one of the franchise’s most shocking and emotional moments, and it cements The Entity as a force to be reckoned with. While Gabriel is the one who physically performed the act, The Entity facilitated it and is still the one pulling the strings. It remains to be seen how Ethan and his team will defeat this new villain in the follow-up to Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, but the team clearly has their work cut out for them.
