A new study by Microsoft sheds light on how artificial intelligence is changing the landscape of work, and the most important thing to worry about is white-collar experts. The report shows that roles, including communication, writing, and research, are most susceptible to AI-driven tools such as chatbots and generative language models. The findings come from an extensive analysis of over 200,000 anonymized user conversations with Microsoft's Bing Copilot AI.
“Our research investigates which occupations can use AI chatbots productively. We introduce AI application scores that measure overlap between AI features and job tasks, highlighting whether AI will change the way they work, take away or exchange jobs.
This study categorizes 80 occupations, 40 occupations highly exposed to AI abilities, and 40 occupations, and the least exposed 40. Highly exposed jobs include interpreters, historians, writers, editors and customer service agents. This is a role that requires AI to communicate or generate information that is increasingly familiar with handling. Even some educators, such as salespeople, public relations experts and even post-secondary business teachers, have made the list.
Interestingly, many of these high-risk roles require advanced degrees. “From an educational requirement perspective, we can see that AI is more applicable to occupations that require a bachelor's degree than occupations with low requirements,” the report states, highlighting that formal education no longer provides a safety net for AI disruptions.
The jobs that are highly ranked on the AI application scale are:
- Interpreters and translators
- Authors and authors
- Customer Service Representative
- Editor
- Public relations expert
- News Analysts and Journalists 0
- Data Scientist
- Post-secondary teacher in business and economics
Meanwhile, jobs that include physical tasks and field work continue to show resilience. The roles of nursing assistants, cement masons, tire repair companies, and dr operators have been largely unaffected, primarily because current AI technology cannot be replicated.
These low-risk jobs include:
- Nursing assistant
- Dangerous material removal workers
- Automotive Glass Installer
- Roofman
- Massage therapist
- Water Treatment Plant Operator
- Cutting Equipment Operator
However, researchers warn that this immunity may not last forever. As AI and robotics evolve, even practical occupations can become gradually automated. Still, for now, people who work in physically demanding or highly specialized manual roles can breathe a little easier.
In this study, AI is no longer just a high-tech buzzword, but is becoming a real power by reconstructing work functions across the industry. AI may not yet completely replace one profession, but it is certainly changing that many of them are operating.
