WILLIAMSTON, Mich. (WILX) – The Michigan Department of Education is providing new guidance to school districts across the state as artificial intelligence becomes more prevalent in classrooms.
This guidance focuses on areas such as student safety, privacy, human oversight, and responsible use of AI.
“When we think about AI, we don’t want to say, ‘AI? Oh my god,'” said Dr. Delsa Chapman, assistant superintendent for the Michigan Department of Education.
Chapman said the department has created both a starter guide and a comprehensive framework to help school districts safely implement AI tools in their schools.
Williamston Community Schools Superintendent Adam Spina said the district has already spent months adapting to growing technology.
“We blocked students from using it and blocked their devices and networks until we were sure that how they were using it was secure,” Spina said.
State and local education leaders said AI should support learning, not replace it.
“This is a supplement, not a replacement for education,” Chapman said. She added, “In terms of doing or completing the assignment, it shows what they learned.”
State education officials said instruction will continue to evolve as AI technology changes rapidly.
