I might have laughed if I said that Meta would come to the action camera market a few years ago. They tried so hard to make the camera cool (remember the portal device that bombed badly due to the imminent repulsion from the Cambridge analysis scandal?), but somehow it didn't work. Two years ago, in a collaboration with Ray-Ban, we clicked on something to set us up for this new collision course. Here Meta's new Oakley Meta HSTN AI smart glasses are aiming for the action of GoPros, Insta360 and DJI, currently shaking by Sports People and Adrenaline Junkies.
These are authentic, starting at $399 and aim for more than your face. Ray-Ban Meta Meta was Meta's temporary foot. The Oakley Meta HSTN kicks that door through the hinge. The company already sells millions of Ray-Ban Meta units, demonstrating the existence of consumer appetite for smart eyewear. Now they're doubling with hardware specifically designed for athletes, weekend warriors and content creators who need hands-free recordings during high-intensity activities. The newly debuted HSTN boasts 3K Ultra HD video capture, packs an eight-hour battery life and is wrapped in Oakley's unmistakable athletic DNA.
Designer: Meta & Oakley

Incremental upgrades from Gen 2 Ray-Bans are absolutely clear. Using HSTN, Meta wants to put the action into the action camera and sprinkle a bit of AI's secret sauce. Despite the same broader intentions, the design, interior and target audience are significantly different compared to Ray-Ban. The Oakley Meta HSTN is designed for sweat, speed and spectacle. Mbappé is a poster child (among other world-class athletes). If you want to sell performances, tap on the World Cup winner rather than the coffee shop. The message is loud: these glasses were made for those who move, not just for those who pose.

Make yourself a nerd with hardware. The Oakley Meta HSTN packs a 3K Ultra HD camera into the bridge of the frame. It's a big leap into the 1080p shooter game for Ray-Ban Gen 2, making it the first mainstream smart glass product with specs that can keep up with the action cams of DJI, Insta360 and GoPro. It has a quick charge function that earns up to 8 hours of battery on a single charge and charges up to 50% in 20 minutes. The included cases are more than just pouches of glory. An additional fee of up to 48 hours is provided. water resistance? IPX4 is rated, so you can sweat, sprint, or get caught in the rain without having to baby the technology. The open-ear speakers are surrounded by secrets in their arms, offering playlists, podcasts, or play-by-play, with enough volume to get through the noise in games and runs.

Meta's AI is burned in and gives hands-free access to voice commands, contextual information, and smart capture. Want to ask the glass about the weather, get training tips, or split them up halfway through? That's the pitch. There is a multi-mic array to keep commands crisp and clear, even when surrounded by fans and roaring engines. Meta connects to the Meta AI app and requires a Meta account. AI and voice capabilities will be deployed in more countries as product lines expand. For creators, athletes and anyone who wants to shoot unique POV content, these specifications mean that you can ultimately place your chest rig and headband in your home without sacrificing quality.

Compared to Ray-Banmeta, Oakley Metata HSTN is another animal. Ray-Ban is about stealth, elegance and daily wear. Oakley is built for performance and presence. The battery is stronger, the camera is sharper and much more durable. Ray-Ban is for brunch and city walks, while Oakley is for gyms, trails, fields and skate parks. The HSTN model also comes in a limited edition with a $499 gold accent. Because if you bend, you might shine as well. Standard models start at $399. This cuts down high-end action cams and puts pressure on the traditional wearable market. Meta isn't just trying to take on snap spectacles here. They plunge the bear in Gopro's den.

The timing couldn't be more perfect. The action camera market is hunger for innovation, and Meta knows that. DJI, Insta360, GoPro – Be careful. Meta and Oakley come straight for users with products that are lighter, more reserved and, importantly, wearable all day long. If Meta can provide video quality, stabilization and ease of sharing, this could mark the first time a facial device that truly competes with the GoPro attached to the chest of an active creator.

There is a real presence in design. Oakley's HSTN frame is unmistakable, bold and built for movement. Open-ear audio means not sacrificing awareness about music. 3K camera means that the highlight reels are actually visible on a large screen, not just on a mobile phone. The water resistance of IPX4 means you can train hard without flinching. Adding the relentless AI push of meta has more than a stunt. This is a shot across all the corporate bows that are still lingering in the “living room wearable” mindset.

The global rollout strategy reveals Meta's serious commitment to this product category. Following early availability across North America, Australia and several European countries, there has been an expansion into Mexico, India and the UAE by the end of the year, indicating significant manufacturing and distribution investments. Debuts at major sporting events such as Fanatics Fest and UFC International Fight Week place glasses directly within performance culture rather than general appliances. Meta understands that authentic adoption by athletes and sports influencers will more effectively drive acceptance of a wider market than traditional tech marketing approaches.
