(Reuters) – Meta Platform (Meta.O) said Wednesday it will begin using people's interactions with generator AI tools to personalize content and ads across apps such as Facebook and Instagram starting December 16th.
Users will be notified of changes starting October 7th and have no option to opt out, the social media giant said, but the update will only apply to people using Meta AI.
Meta said user interaction with AI features, whether voice or text, will be added to existing data such as likes to form recommendations for content and advertising, including reels and ads. For example, users talking about hiking with Meta AI may later see hiking groups, updates on a friend's trail, or ads on boots.
“People interactions will be another part of another input that informs feed and ad personalization,” says Christy Harris, Privacy Policy Manager at Meta. “We are in the process of building the first product that will utilize this data.”
When people talk to meta AI about more sensitive topics such as religious views, sexual orientation, political views, health, racial or ethnic origins, meta does not use those topics to display ads.
The deployment begins in most regions on December 16th and will expand over time except for the UK, the European Union and South Korea.
Meta AI currently has 1 billion active users per month across the entire family of the company.
“The focus of this year is to make meta AI a major individual AI with a focus on personalization, voice conversation and entertainment,” CEO Mark Zuckerberg said at the company's annual shareholders meeting this year.
Meta launched its first consumer-ready smart glasses at Connect Conference last month.
The company's use of AI interactions to ads has resulted in other tech giants, including Google (Googl.o) and Amazon (AMZN.O), beginning to monetize AI tools through often cloud-based services. However, few people use AI chat interactions to personalize content and ads across multiple platforms at the scale that the meta is trying to do.
