Meta uses chat with AI to sell hyper-target ads

Applications of AI

Meta announced that it will bring about major changes to its privacy policy in a few months. Start using data from chat with AI products to sell hypertarget ads. And there's no way to opt out.

Not long ago, Amazon shared that it plans to monetize Alexa+ by advertising users during chat.

Now, Meta has announced its own plan to do the same thing.

In a new post about Meta's newsroom, the company announced:

Over 1 billion people use Meta AI every month. We will continue to improve the way AI products feel relevant to you, understand your goals and help you achieve tasks more efficiently.

It also uses meta AI and other AI features to improve the experience across all platforms. Instantly use AI interactions in Meta to personalize content and ads, including posts and reels. We will begin notifying people via notifications and notifications and emails about this update a few weeks before it becomes effective on December 16th, 2025.

Essentially, when using Meta's AI-related products or features, including chatbots, the data from these interactions is used to “personalize” the ads you see.

This means that Meta uses almost everything it shares in chats with AI to sell hyper-target ads.

However, there are some stated exceptions.

When people talk to meta AI about topics such as religious views, sexual orientation, political views, health, racial or ethnic origins, philosophical beliefs, or union membership, we do not use those topics to display ads.

If you are concerned about privacy, the only way to opt out is to stop using Meta's AI products.

Depending on how you feel about privacy, you may prefer to be able to get more relevant ads across the Meta platform. But I think for many users this move is something they don't know about and appreciate.

In particular, using AI on one platform, such as WhatsApp or Instagram, causes data sharing to occur on all other meta platforms when your account is connected.

It is also worth considering how this will affect Meta's smart glass products.
