Meta shares previews of the incorrectly coming AI glasses

It appears someone from Meta HQ is releasing a little early in their latest video for their upcoming Smart Glasses Project. The platform appears to be previewing a variety of new styles of glasses, including head-up displays.

The video uploaded to Meta's YouTube channel (which was then deleted a little later) is probably a promotion for Meta's Connect Conference, which will take place later this week.

Also, a few different smart glasses, namely “AI glasses,” are now displayed, so that meta is likely to be exhibited at events.

As can be seen in this still image taken from the clip before the clip was deleted, Meta is set to showcase four different variations of AI glasses, including:

  • Ray-Ban branded HUD glasses include head-up display elements and Meta's long-awaited list controller devices
  • Oakley Meta Sphaera Glasses aimed at athletes with a camera in the center of the frame
  • Latest version of Meta's Ray-Ban AI Glasses
  • Current Oakley Meta HSTN Glasses

All of these have been in development for a while and continue to build a lineup of AI/AR glasses, so Meta appears to be very close to official announcements with these new models.

Of course, the main item of interest is Meta's HUD glasses, which are reportedly referred to as the “hypernova” under development.

As reported in uploadVR, MetaVideo highlights the various uses of the new HUD glasses. Overlays and list controls allow users to send messages, get instructions, and identify what they can see.

That feature is what has been expected for some time.

Back in January, Bloomberg reported The meta was working on a new version of Ray-Banglass with a small head-up display. This allows users to get notifications and view photos within their field of view.

Further reports show that Meta's Hypernovagrass acts as a sort of bridge between current AI glasses and full AR wearables. Meta's innovative list control UI Set it to be a critical step in broader development.

Meta's List Controller uses differential muscle contrast (EMG) to detect muscle movements and convert them into digital signals.

This could be a revolution in digital interaction and a critical step to get Mark Zuckerberg's glasses to overtake the phone as a major connecting device.

This is a very important launch, and the report also suggests that Meta's Hypernovagrass will cost around $800 at launch.

Meanwhile, Meta's Oakley Spa Hala glasses were first reported in January. This design is based on Oakley's existing Sphaera Glasses, designed to maximize athlete performance.

The camera reportedly is centered on the frame to lose weight, and the main focus of these glasses is to help athletes capture important data for training.

As mentioned before, neither of these are surprising, but it's interesting to see where Meta is heading with AI glasses and how they want to step up with their next model. Especially with the application of AI, development could accelerate when usage increases, and as Meta is already leading the sales of smart glasses, it appears to be suitable to leverage its market position and build a larger product business.

Of course, there is competition.

While Apple is still developing a second generation of Vision Pro AR devices, today Snapchat has launched a new SNAP OS with AR specifications.

Although each company has taken a very different approach, it will be interesting to see if it actually breaks through and becomes an essential device for AI/AR interactions.

If I had to speculate, I bet to bring the most important advances to the meta. There is also a production and design pipeline to come up with a better, more popular wearable model, as its AI glasses are already on sale well.

While Vision Pro is not designed for everyday use (at this stage), Snap's devices appear functionally inferior given that Meta owns its own AI infrastructure and invests much more in device design and manufacturing.

So while others may be able to move the meta ahead with full AR, I think in the end, Meta's approach to deploying AI glasses will flow into the AR tools, making it the most successful path to sustainable and viable production of the best devices.
