Internal documents reviewed by Business Insider show that while the goals vary by team, they are part of a broader push to incorporate AI into daily engineering work. The move comes as the company restructures parts of its business and reduces its workforce.
Goals vary by team

Scalable Machine Learning, which builds AI infrastructure, has set goals for AI-assisted coding in the 50% to 80% range. Previously, company-wide goals for late 2025 called for AI agents to support 55% of code changes for central product teams.
The company is also promoting widespread adoption of the tool. around it 80% of mid-to-senior engineers are expected to use AI platforms such as Gemini, DevMate, and Metamatethe focus is on adoption and impact rather than just output levels.
AI as a performance expectation
Although it remains unclear whether these goals are directly tied to formal performance reviews, internal communications indicate that Utilization of AI is becoming the core of expectations.
Janelle Gale, head of human resources at Meta, told employees in a memo last year that from 2026 onwards, “AI impact” will be central to performance. Employees are also encouraged to highlight their use of AI tools in their self-assessments, with support from an in-house “AI performance assistant.”
A Meta spokesperson told Business Insider that the performance system is designed to reward the results delivered by AI, not just the use of AI.
Restructuring and workplace transfers
Coding objectives occur in parallel with a broader organizational review. Another internal memo cited by Business Insider revealed that the 1,000-person team within Reality Labs has been reorganized into smaller, cross-functional “pods.”
Employees on these teams have been assigned new roles such as AI Builder, AI Pod Lead, and AI Org Lead to reflect the move to flatter structures and AI-driven collaboration. Engineers can now take on hybrid responsibilities that include design work.
Meta’s chief technology officer, Andrew Bosworth, also oversees the company’s “AI for Work” initiative, which aims to expand internal adoption of AI tools.
Downsizing and productivity pressures
As efforts toward AI progress, Recent work spans multiple departmentsincluding Reality Labs and Recruitment. While the company says the layoffs are not directly related to its AI strategy, the timing highlights a broader shift to leaner teams supported by automation.
