Similar to OpenAI’s Sora app, Vibes allows users to instruct Meta AI to create TikTok-style vertical videos.
“Following strong early traction for Vibes within Meta AI, we are testing a standalone app to further build on that momentum,” Meta said in a statement. “We’ve seen users increasingly turning to this format to create, discover, and share AI-generated videos with friends. This standalone app provides a dedicated home for that experience, giving people a more focused and immersive environment. We aim to further expand the app based on what we learn from the community.”
Although Meta has not yet released specific numbers on how many people are actually using Vibes, the company claims that Meta AI usage has continued to increase since Vibes’ launch. By splitting this functionality into its own app, Meta could potentially add more functionality without cluttering the existing Meta AI app. The company believes AI-generated content will be the next big source of engagement on its platform, and said in an October 2025 earnings call that it plans to incorporate more AI images and videos into its recommendation algorithms. A dedicated video creation app like Vibes could be one way Meta wants to do that.
As Meta’s main competitor in the burgeoning field of AI-first social media, OpenAI has iterated on its Sora app, added a way for characters and pets to make cameos in videos, and struck a deal with Disney to allow users to generate content featuring Disney characters. Considering the company has licensed celebrity portraits in the past, it seems possible that Meta could pursue a similar deal. No matter what happens, AI-generated video seems increasingly inevitable.
