Meta is currently testing a standalone version of Vibes, an AI-generated video feed. Think TikTok. But all videos are made by machines. There are no creators, no cameras, no lived moments. Just a prompt, pixels, and infinite output. For now, the Vibes app is only available in Brazil and Mexico.
From a product perspective, it makes sense. Meta is all about AI, and Vibes is a clean way to show off the tool’s capabilities. Fast, full screen, and optimized for scrolling. It’s a perfect demo.
However, culturally…it feels strange.
Generative AI is definitely powerful. It helps people prototype ideas, visualize concepts, and create things that would otherwise be impossible. When used with human intent, it becomes a multiplier. Used on its own, it becomes something completely different – content with no experience.
Originally, AI does not represent, but recombines.
We don’t observe the world, feel its tensions, notice its contradictions, or live moments worth translating. it produces. And when production becomes easy and limitless, quality does not increase, but noise increases.
That’s the real risk here. It’s not that AI content exists, it’s that it scales faster than you’d like. Every half-baked idea becomes a video, and your feed becomes full of things that technically look good but don’t say anything. There is no outlook. There is no perspective. There’s no reason to care.
Social media is always most effective when it helps us see the world through other people’s eyes. When it conveys voice, personality, and intent. Completely AI-generated feeds take the “someone” out of the equation.
AI should be a tool that supports human creativity, not a replacement for it. Standalone feeds of machine-generated content feel more like an extremely expensive flex than the future of culture.
That’s certainly impressive. But also remember that creativity is not a system to optimize. It’s a human signal. And when I delete it, all that’s left is content that scrolls to the end, perfectly rendered, and strangely empty.
