Meta is creating a new applied AI engineering organization to accelerate its superintelligence efforts, according to two employees familiar with the matter.
The new organization will be led by Maher Saba, vice president of Reality Labs, Meta’s division responsible for Metaverse products and AI-powered smart glasses. Saba’s new group will report directly to Chief Technology Officer Andrew Bosworth. The ratio of managers to employees for teams within an organization will be up to 1:50.
Mehta declined to comment.
The group will work closely with Meta Superintelligence Labs, an organization Meta founded last summer and led by former Scale AI head Alexandr Wang, to oversee the development of Meta’s frontier AI models. According to an internal memo, Saba’s team plans to build “a data engine to help improve and accelerate models.” The Wall Street Journal first reported on the memo.
The new organization will have two distinct teams, one focused on building interfaces and internal tools, and another dedicated to helping feed data into the AI.
“Building great models is about more than researchers and computing,” Saba said in the memo, employees said.
Saba added that the group aims to transform competent AI models into market-leading models. He pointed to recent AI research advances in reinforcement learning and post-training as evidence that Meta has room to accelerate if it invests more aggressively in this area, the people said.
This unusually flat structure reflects a broader organizational philosophy that CEO Mark Zuckerberg outlined in Meta’s latest earnings call. Zuckerberg told investors that Meta is “elevating individual contributors and flattening teams,” and said the company is already seeing “projects that used to require large teams now being accomplished by a single, extremely talented person.”
Nvidia, another big tech company, is also known for its flat structure, with CEO Jensen Huang having more than 30 direct reports.
