Mentorship and machine learning: graduate student Eileen Fang is a leader wherever she goes

A human biology and immunology major, Eileen Fang has used opportunities in and out of the classroom to research innovative methods of ultrasonic detection with artificial intelligence and machine learning. She is also working on human cell and protein studies that may lead to new treatments and therapies for immunocompromised patients.

How would you explain your research to a non-specialist?

I am interested in machine learning. It is a branch of artificial intelligence that teaches and trains machines to perform specific tasks and identify patterns through programming.

There are two types of machine learning. Supervised learning involves using labeled images to train machine learning algorithms. In unsupervised learning, algorithms learn using unlabeled images. This is advantageous as it eliminates the need to seek out a specialized annotator or sonographer to label the images, saving time and money. How does your field of study improve the lives of ordinary people?

It is very interesting that AI is already revolutionizing the medical field. Specifically, AI could help classify ultrasound images to enhance early detection and diagnosis of internal bleeding due to injury or hemophilia. Overall, AI has the potential to make patient care more efficient, thereby improving health outcomes.

As far as my immunology research is concerned, in some people suffering from autoimmune diseases and infections, memory B cells that express specific receptors are dysregulated, so I wonder how memory B cells are affected. A deeper understanding of what is regulated may provide valuable insight into the mechanisms underlying such diseases. This will enable scientists to develop new treatments that reduce patient symptoms.

What kind of career or work do you want to do after graduation?

I want to pursue a career in the medical field, do more research, interact with diverse people and develop a deep passion for science. I want to dedicate my career to improving human health outcomes while translating knowledge to make science more accessible to everyone.

You spent time at T University as an academic peer advisor. Why is this job so important to you and what made it so fulfilling?

I remember feeling overwhelmed in my freshman year until I consulted with my supervisor. If I hadn’t talked to them, I wouldn’t have found out about the original research program, much less applied. Looking back, it opened the door to even more new and incredible possibilities and opportunities. This experience made me realize the importance and power of mentorship and inspired me to become an academic peer advisor. Seeing my mentee grow and reach their goals has made the role so rewarding that I am determined to engage in mentorship throughout my post-graduation career.

Do you have any advice for current and incoming students on how to make the most of their experience at T University?

No silly questions, so ask all the questions. Get involved by volunteering, participating in work-study programs, playing sports, and joining clubs. Meeting new people and talking to strangers can be daunting, but an undergraduate career is a journey of exploration, learning, and growth.

Keep an open mind and don’t be afraid to try something new. By immersing yourself in different fields, you can discover your own interests and passions, which can lead you down unexpected yet meaningful paths.

Also, be kind to yourself because failure is a normal part of the learning process. The key is to see it as an opportunity to learn, grow, and build resilience. Finally, school and work may keep you busy, but don’t forget to allocate time for self-care. Exercise, sleep and pursue hobbies because mental health is essential to success in life.
