The chilling new clip looks like a savings expert promoting an investment app on breakfast TV, but it’s actually a clever move that uses the latest technology to mimic his face and voice. It’s the result of an AI scam.
Anyone who falls for the faked video is expected to be one of the 3 million Britons who lose their hard-earned money each year to the scam.
Martin has been targeted by online scammers who use his image to promote bogus get-rich-quick schemes, but claims it’s the first time he’s seen himself used in a deepfake video. described the experience as “terrifying”.
He posted on Twitter, “Warning. This is a scam by criminals trying to steal your money. Please share.”
“This is terrifying. This is the first deepfake video scam I’ve appeared in. Governments and regulators must step up to stop big tech companies from publishing such dangerous fakes. People will lose money and ruin their lives.”
In a blog post on the Money Saving Expert website, Martin said he reached out to Twitter about the scam and is waiting for a response.
It’s not clear which social media network the video was uploaded to before being sent by Twitter followers.
He urged anyone who has seen the shared video to “tell the poster that this is a scam and is a fake Martin video.”
