Malaysian officials receive threatening emails with fake videos generated by AI

Tempo.co, Jakarta – Several members of the Congress and the Minister Malaysia I've been receiving threatening emails from unknown people who are demanding a ransom of 100,000 US dollars, including fake videos generated by AI.

Malaysian Communications Minister Fami Fazil said the email contained screenshots of fake videos related to inappropriate activities and threatened to spread the video if the requests were not met.

“Based on the investigation, it was found that the email was thought to have been sent from the same email address, with similar screenshots,” Fami said in a statement as she reported in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Antara Sunday, September 14th, 2025.

Fami has also admitted to receiving similar threatening emails. “I got the same email too,” Fami said.

Several members of the legislative and state authorities who received the email included Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli. Suban Rep. Wonchen; Sungai Petani MP Taufiq Johari; Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports Adam Adri in Malaysia, and Exponajwan Halimi, Selangor Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur.

Additionally, the email was also addressed to Senator Manoran Mohammad. Kulim Assemblyman Wong Chia Zen; Selangor Islamic Islamic Issues and Cultural Innovation Exofahminga.

Fami emphasized that the government is taking the incident seriously. He has instructed the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to work with the Malaysian Police (PDRM) to detect and track down the perpetrators who sent threatening emails through the Gmail application.

The Malaysian government emphasized that sending threatening messages is a violation under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act of 1998.

Such behavior can also be investigated under Section 503 of the Criminal Code. This can be fined for up to two years, or both, or imprisonment.
