Lumen Technologies expands its enterprise networking portfolio with Multi-Cloud Gateway (MCGW) to enhance metro data center connectivity across major U.S. markets.
Through its expansion, Lumen claimed to simplify connectivity and remove complexity in how data moves between hybrid environments by introducing centralized multi-cloud routing and high-capacity private metro connectivity. The result is a more consistent and controllable network foundation for artificial intelligence (AI) and other modern workloads.
Commenting on the current state of the modern workplace and the impact of AI, Courtney Munro, vice president of Worldwide Telecommunications Research at analyst firm IDC, noted that AI is reshaping network design, prompting companies to move from experimenting to implementing architectures that reduce latency, cost volatility, and operational complexity.
“As workloads become more distributed and performance-focused, organizations are rethinking how they connect edge sites, data centers, and multiple clouds. Lumen’s network fabric shows how programmable networks can provide more consistent data movement,” he commented.
Lumen believes its enhanced products and services will accelerate the movement of data between cloud and enterprise environments, enabling analytics to respond to changing demands and increasing business agility.
The multicloud gateway is a core element of the transition to cloud-based communications and is built as a software-defined, self-service routing layer on top of Lumen’s global fiber network. It is said to provide private, high-capacity connectivity between enterprises, hyperscalers, and emerging cloud platforms, turning traditional communications interconnects into programmable cloud fabrics.
By unifying connectivity, routing, and policy, Lumen believes MCGW can reduce operational complexity, speed time to service, and reduce total cost of ownership. This means customers can dynamically connect between clouds and between clouds and enterprise environments, optimize traffic for performance and cost, and support advanced use cases such as AI workload distribution and real-time data exchange.
In addition to this, we have built metro Ethernet and IP services that provide expanded, high-capacity, dedicated connectivity across 16 markets in the U.S., delivering up to 100 Gbps between regional data centers, campuses, and edge locations, and up to 400 Gbps in key cloud data centers in these markets. Lumen said this will enable fast and secure movement of large datasets for AI training, analytics, replication and disaster recovery.
Recently upgraded markets include Northern Virginia, Atlanta, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New York City and Seattle.
Lumen explained why enhancement and launch are important for enterprises, saying that the network moves from being a constraint to an enabler, allowing organizations to move faster, scale with confidence, and innovate more. He added that the business impact is immediate and real for industries expanding their AI ambitions, citing uses in financial services, retail, healthcare and manufacturing.
In the financial sector, he said, centralized policy controls allow enterprises to synchronize risk, payments and fraud workloads across multiple clouds, reducing latency and achieving more predictable performance. Retailers can improve business agility by accelerating the movement of data across cloud and enterprise environments, allowing analytics to adapt to changing demands, the company said.
Healthcare use cases are currently being envisioned to maintain data separation, support telemedicine services, image processing and analysis, disaster recovery, and manage research workloads across institutions and resource centers. Manufacturers will be able to connect local facilities with cloud environments, enabling real-time analysis and predictive maintenance.
“Moving data between hybrid environments is a lot like managing air traffic: You need clear routes, predictable timing, and the ability to adjust as conditions change. Most traditional networks weren’t built with that level of coordination in mind,” said Jim Fowler, chief technology and product officer at Lumen.
