Liza Minnelli stands by her decision to use an AI voice cloning company for her first new song in 13 years.
“Today is my first EDM single since the days of Pet Shop Boys.” [was] Released by Eleven Labs, a $6 billion tech giant[ing] It’s amazing,” she wrote in a Facebook post this week.
Eleven Lab describes itself on its website as “a select group of pioneering artists who use new technology to expand their sound.” Users can use artificial intelligence to generate complete songs in minutes, and celebrities will also have the ability to license their AI-cloned voices.
The 79-year-old EGOT winner also emphasized that her new dance track, “Kids Wait Till You Hear This,” does not use AI to generate actual voices.
“We used an AI arrangement. Not an AI vocal,” she wrote. “A few trolls don’t even bother to read the truth and check with me and my partner. All the shouting is mine!”
The new song features Minnelli speaking various phrases set to a techno beat. This is one of 13 songs from ElevenLab’s recently released The Eleven Album, which spotlights a variety of artists including Art Garfunkel, fusing their signature sounds with AI features and arrangements.
In a statement to NBC News, Minnelli further defended his decision to work with the company, saying he was interested in “using my voice and new tools for expression, not in place of it.”
“This project respects artist voice, artist choice, and artist ownership,” she added.
