LinkedIn CEO says flashy degrees aren't that important in future jobs

To some degree of that sheen you got from top universities? LinkedIn CEO says it may not provide the same edge it once did for future employment markets.

Ryan Roslansky, CEO of LinkedIn and EVP at Microsoft Office and Copilot, said in a fireside chat at his San Francisco office on Tuesday that adopting AI and three other qualities is more valuable as businesses incorporate artificial intelligence into their workplaces.

“I think the shift in thinking is probably the most exciting thing, because the future of work is no longer part of people who have the most fancy degree or have gone to the best universities, but those who are adaptable, positively thinking, learning, ready and ready to embrace these tools,” Roslansky said. “It really opens the arena in a way we don't think we've ever seen.”

AI literacy is now hunting with new resume skill recruiters.

A 2024 survey by Microsoft found that 71% of business leaders use experienced candidates to select fewer candidates with AI skills.

LinkedIn data shared Tuesday during the company's “Work Day AI” event showed a 70% increase in job postings requiring AI literacy over the past year.

If you change what your employer is looking for, Karin “Adaptability is the new currency,” Kimbrough, Chief Economist at LinkedIn, said at the event.

“AI is changing rapidly. It will change the type of skills we want, the type of work we have. “It's a lot. It's a little scary.”

Despite the widespread use of AI in the workplace, Roslansky said he doesn't think AI will completely replace humans. Those who embrace AI will replace those who do not. Knowing how to talk to a chatbot is not enough.

Interpersonal skills are still valued, Roslansky said.

“I believe that all these human elements will be, frankly, secret weapons for most people,” he said. “So you can just empathize, communicate, adaptability, actually talk to someone. Don't forget about human skills. These are important to succeeding in what you're trying to move forward.”
