Lady Keene College celebrates 91st anniversary, Linbui calls for responsible use of AI and technology

Shillong, July 25: Meghalaya Education Minister Lakmen Lingbui on Saturday called on students to embrace innovation while using technology responsibly, as Lady Keene University celebrates its 91st foundation anniversary commemorating over 90 years of academic excellence and women’s empowerment.

Themed “Building Tomorrow with 91 Years of Tradition”, the celebration brought together students, alumni, faculty, staff, government officials and distinguished guests to honor one of Meghalaya’s oldest institutions of higher learning.

Addressing the gathering, Rimbui praised the university’s contribution to developing generations of women leaders and strengthening higher education in Meghalaya and the Northeast. She said Lady Keene College is a symbol of academic excellence whose impact extends beyond the classroom to the empowerment of women and society.

The minister called on students to prepare for a rapidly evolving world, saying advances in technology, including artificial intelligence, are changing the way people learn and communicate. However, he stressed that students must use technology responsibly, protect their mental health and develop critical thinking, discipline and perseverance.

“The tools may have changed, but the importance of creating meaningful impact remains the same,” he said, urging young people to remain focused and purposeful while exploring new opportunities.

Mr. Rimbui also reiterated the Meghalaya government’s commitment to strengthening higher education through greater investment in innovation, collaboration and youth participation in development.

Director of Higher and Technical Education HBD Sangma praised the school’s enduring contribution to women’s education and urged students to go beyond academic excellence by embracing creativity, entrepreneurship and emerging technologies.

She said that while a degree opens doors, qualities such as character, ability, innovation and lifelong learning ultimately define success. She also encouraged the students to preserve Meghalaya’s cultural heritage, protect the environment and lead with humility and compassion.

During the celebration, the Minister of Education launched the College Magazine, the Keene Arts Journal, and the Annual History Magazine, which highlight the university’s academic and literary achievements.

The university also recognized outstanding students, faculty, and institutions with awards for excellence in research, academics, inclusion, student engagement, fashion design, and extracurricular activities.

The program concluded with a variety of cultural performances by students, showcasing the school’s rich heritage and vibrant campus life as it moves towards its 100th anniversary.
