KPMG sets 75% AI usage goal with new dashboard, employees report gaps: report

Business Insider reports that KPMG has introduced an internal dashboard for its U.S. advisory division that allows employees to monitor how often they use artificial intelligence tools.

The tool was introduced late last year and is used across its approximately 10,000 employees. This allows staff to compare their AI usage against set goals and against their colleagues. The company said the move is aimed at promoting more consistent and advanced use of AI across teams.

A KPMG spokesperson told Business Insider that internal data suggests that employees who regularly use AI produce higher quality work, have lower stress levels and spend more time on higher-value work. The spokesperson added that these results could support faster career growth and improved customer service.

The company also said that more than 90% of its U.S. employees already use AI tools on a weekly basis.

Push beyond basic recruitment

KPMG demonstrated that the focus is shifting from simply getting employees to use AI to improving how effectively they use it. The company is supporting this effort with a combination of internal platforms and external tools such as Microsoft 365 Copilot.

Many employees are expected to meet usage benchmarks of approximately 75% of the workday. Dashboards track activity across multiple tools and display it as measurable metrics.

The company said the dashboard is part of a broader strategy that includes training initiatives and incentives such as the AI ​​Spark Innovation Awards, which recognize employees for innovative applications of AI.

KPMG also collaborated with the University of Texas at Austin to study how employees can use AI to achieve better outcomes. According to the company, its findings suggest that effective users treat AI as a collaboration tool rather than limiting it to basic tasks.

Employees report concerns

However, some employees told Business Insider that the system may not accurately reflect actual usage. Two anonymous employees said the dashboards can be manipulated and may not provide a complete picture of how AI is being used in day-to-day operations.

One employee said even one prompt could count as usage for the day, adding that automated prompts could be used to inflate activity metrics. We also noted that certain AI tools for developers are not tracked by the system.

Broad trends across the enterprise

KPMG’s approach reflects a broader shift as companies seek to quantify the returns they receive from their AI investments. Companies like JPMorgan Chase, The Walt Disney Company, and Amazon also use internal dashboards to monitor how often employees use AI tools and how that impact is on productivity.

KPMG said its dashboard aims to drive adoption through incentives, rather than compulsion, to drive a more integrated and sophisticated use of AI across operations.
