A new front-runner has emerged in the frenetic race to dominate the generative artificial intelligence (AI) industry. It’s called Kimi K3, and it emerged from the labs of Chinese startup Moonshot AI. This model gained considerable attention in the space after the company published performance test results that outperformed Anthropic’s most powerful model, Claude Fable 5, and ChatGPT’s best model, GPT5.6 Sol. Its open source nature, meaning its inner workings can be inspected and modified by any user, makes it a strong competitor to proprietary models from Google (Gemini), OpenAI (ChatGPT), Anthropic (Claude), Microsoft (Copilot), and others.
China is back in the game with the launch of the Kimi K3, which goes on sale from July 27th. The Asian giant forced its way in in January 2025 with DeepSeek, a model that adapts to U.S. chip export restrictions and challenges the sector’s biggest players. There are developments in the generative AI industry almost every week, but since then, none from China has caused as much noise as this one, until the early hours of July 16, when Moonshot AI, a company founded in 2023, announced a new toy.
The Kimi K3 model was developed with 2.8 trillion parameters (variables that are adjusted during training). This makes it the largest open source model in the world (the largest DeepSeek model is 1.6 trillion). The weights of these parameters will be published from that date. Any researcher, institution, or company will be able to tailor Kimi K3’s code to their own needs and build bespoke tools, similar to the DeepSeek model and Meta’s Llama model.
Kimi K3 has proven to be particularly good at programming. Ranked #1 on the LLM Arena leaderboard for creating online interfaces. It also scores highly on other software development tasks, comparable to the levels achieved by OpenAI and Anthropic. For example, you can generate an interactive, playable 3D environment from a single photo. The K3 model processes one million tokens (the basic unit of text) in a single task, so it can handle very large datasets without sacrificing accuracy.
However, Moonshot AI says not all of its computing power will be used to answer every prompt or request. This model includes a system that activates only the appropriate subset of parameters needed to answer each query. Experts recommend considering this approach to improve the efficiency of your AI models. Just as you don’t need to read the entire Encyclopedia Britannica to answer when Pablo Picasso was born, you don’t need to calculate everything every time a particular task is required. The more parameters involved in each operation, the greater the energy consumption. Significant savings can be made by avoiding full activation each time.
Economic and geopolitical impact
The arrival of the Kimi K3 doesn’t just mean China is once again leading the way in the industry. This could have a profound impact on AI business itself. The open source K3 model offers better performance than top-of-the-line proprietary (closed source) models such as Claude Fable. “How does Anthropic justify its Fable pricing when the best open-weight models outperform the best closed-source models? Why would anyone pay that fee?” Xiaowin Qu, a former product director at Meta and an entrepreneur in the AI field, asked about X.

From a geopolitical perspective, Kimi K3’s strong performance shows that the US ban on the sale of Nvidia chips, widely considered the world’s best, to China was not enough to halt the Asian giant’s progress in the industry. If Huawei becomes the new benchmark for cutting-edge chip manufacturing, Qu thinks it will be a “nightmare.”
The announcement of the K3 model coincided with the launch of a China-led international AI governance organization. The World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization (WAICO) includes approximately 30 participating countries, including Russia, Pakistan, Indonesia, Brazil, Cuba, and Venezuela. Chinese President Xi Jinping said last Friday: “Responding to the call of the Global South and uniting the international community to vigorously promote AI development and governance is an important initiative by China.”
