The Kerala Police has registered a case against X and a user for disseminating an AI-generated video that allegedly depicts the Chief Minister and the ECI in a misleading manner. Officials said the content could affect free and fair elections in poll-bound states

Thiruvananthapuram: The cyber wing of the Kerala Police has filed a complaint against social media platform
The video in question refers to the incident of the EC letter bearing the seal of the BJP’s Kerala unit, and the issue has turned into a political controversy in the poll-bound state.
Police said the video has not yet been deleted from the handle X where it was posted.
The police further said in a statement that the alleged defamation was reported through official channels including the Election Commission of India (ECI).
“As a result of our review, it was determined that this content could mislead the public, undermine the credibility of constitutional institutions, and have a negative impact on the conduct of free and fair elections.”
Late on Wednesday night, a case was registered at Thiruvananthapuram City Cyber Crime Police Station against Twitter account Lakshmi N. Raju (@valiant_Raju) and other accounts, including X Company, and an investigation has been initiated to ascertain responsibility and take action in accordance with the law, the paper said.
The FIR was lodged under sections 352 (deliberate insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 336 (forgery), 353 (remarks amounting to public mischief), 3(5) (common intention) and 174 (punishment for undue influence or personality in elections) of the Bharatiya Janata Party and Section 66C (identity theft) of the Act. Information Technology Law.
According to the FIR, the 1 minute and 17 seconds long video was posted on social media platforms with the aim of causing social unrest, and Company X allowed it to be spread despite instructions from authorities to remove the content.
Police said they have issued necessary legal notices to intermediary platforms under relevant provisions of the Information Technology Act and Rules for prompt removal of illegal content.
It further said that in accordance with the Model Code of Conduct and applicable legal provisions, the Kerala Police Cyber Operations Squad has immediately initiated steps to prevent further circulation of the video.
“The public is advised to exercise caution and refrain from creating, sharing or amplifying unverified or misleading content, especially during the election period,” police said.
He said swift, lawful and fair action would be taken against any activity that interferes with or attempts to influence free and fair elections.

The EC said this was a “purely administrative error” that was immediately corrected. It also announced that the person responsible for this mistake has been suspended.
