- Google Vids platform includes Veo 3.1 AI video and Lyria 3 AI music models, among other upgrades
- This update is designed to make creating AI videos easier and more convenient for the average person.
- Investment in Vids comes as OpenAI exits Sora’s consumer AI video platform
Sora’s sudden disappearance trick made many people wonder about the future of AI video production. Nevertheless, Google is doubling down on this idea with a series of major upgrades to Google Vids, its browser-based AI video creation toolkit. Once more targeted towards business and enterprise services, the latest batch of updates is now suggested to the average user new to AI production.
The most notable addition is Veo 3.1, Google’s latest video generation model, now built directly into Vids. Anyone with a Google Account can generate AI video clips for free. For individual users, this includes 10 generation per month. Google is touting this as a way to create animated flyers for parties, greeting cards, or other fun projects. Please note that this is not a method for creating cinematic masterpieces.
For most people, the Veo 3.1 is of interest as a shortcut, not as a feat of machine creativity. Whether you need a hilarious clip to open a family slideshow, a visual for a school project, or a quick social post for something you’re promoting as a side hustle, the hardest part is often not having an idea. It makes it look like more than just an elaborate PowerPoint.

The same goes for music produced by AI. Google Vids integrates Lyria 3 and Lyria 3 Pro models, but it’s not as available as Veo 3.1. Only Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers can use these to generate custom soundtracks from 30-second clips to 3-minute tracks.
Unless you have a talent for composing or editing music, adding audio is more than just a win. Many homemade videos, even if the visuals are great, are ruined by the soundtrack. A slightly sentimental family montage can overcome the mundane vicissitudes. You can’t survive on terrible royalty-free ukulele songs.
Vids also utilizes AI to create the look and sound of your “avatar.” These customizable digital characters can be directed to behave freely within the video while maintaining a consistent appearance and sound throughout the scene. By entering requests, you can ask the AI model to adjust its settings, clothing, and even the props it interacts with.
It is also arguably the deepest feature of the uncanny valley. But if you’re okay with that, this is also a clear example of Google trying to make AI media creation feel more like a software tool than just a novelty.
Exit Sora and enter everyone’s Veo
On the other hand, OpenAI may be backing away from the idea that everyday users want a separate destination just for AI-generated video experiments. Google’s move suggests that the company thinks people may very much want to embed AI video capabilities into larger platforms.
Google is also actively expanding this. AI Ultra and Workspace AI Ultra users can now generate up to 1,000 Veo videos per month. This is more than just the number of sub-functions. It’s an area where “we think this is becoming part of the way people work and create.”
And that’s actually the bigger story. Google isn’t just adding additional AI features to its video app. That’s because they’re making specific bets about what average people actually want from these tools. Rather than a standalone playground for abstract generative experiments, it’s a set of built-in features that help turn everyday moments into something complete and shareable with little effort.
This may also explain why this update feels better timed than it originally was. If OpenAI’s consumer withdrawal from Sora suggests that AI video as a destination has been a harder sell than expected, Google’s approach signals a more sustainable version of the category.
