John Waters uses AI to ‘cure cancer’ but ‘not to help people write’

Applications of AI

Pope Trash gave his opinion on the future of artificial intelligence, as there are many divided opinions about its place in Hollywood.

In a recent interview, John Waters said he thought AI “would be good for porn” but realized he was wrong, saying he would not use artificial intelligence “to help me write” as he prepared to write the blurb for Mosswood Meltdown, a punk festival in Auckland from July 17 to 19.

“I wouldn’t use AI to help me write. I would use AI to cure cancer,” he told Billboard of his thoughts on AI. “But I’m not going to write it. No, I saw something that I think the AI wrote for me. It looked like a really bad first draft. But sure enough, it was a first draft.”

Waters continued, “For me, no, I wouldn’t do it. Even if I wanted to, I wouldn’t know how. I think I always thought it would be good for porn, but you know what? It looks too good. I thought I liked it, but I don’t. It looks too good.”

The use of AI in Hollywood continues to be a hot topic. Meanwhile, SAG-AFTRA supports the Trump administration’s AI policy framework and is calling on Congress to enact legislation that includes parental controls, protections for intellectual property rights, First Amendment protections, expanded AI talent development, allowing data centers to generate their own electricity, and removing legal barriers that limit AI innovation.

Earlier this month, President Trump signed an executive order on a voluntary framework for AI companies to provide the government with access to new models during a 30-day review period before they are released.
