Independent University of Bangladesh (IUB) celebrated National Library Day 2026 on February 5, emphasizing the role of libraries in access to knowledge, research literacy and responsible use of information, a press release said.

The program, hosted by IUB Libraries, included formal lectures, featured lectures, student activities, and recognition segments aimed at promoting the effective and ethical use of information resources.

A special lecture titled “From Search to Discovery: How AI is Transforming Research” was delivered by Dr. Ashraful Islam, Director of IUB Center for Computational and Data Sciences (CCDS). He highlighted the growing use of artificial intelligence in research and information discovery.

A pop quiz contest was also held, coordinated by Mr. Mubashir Ahsan, Deputy Director of Library and Information Technology Department. The three winners received certificates and book coupons. Earlier in the day, the activities began with a rally at the Bashundhara residential area, followed by a reflection session by the winners of the contest.

Vice-Chancellor Professor M. Tamim said, “Knowledge cannot replace imagination. Knowledge is information, known or unknown, and both are acquired during undergraduate studies. This is why we have a rich library. National Library Day raises awareness about libraries and IUB has one of the most comprehensive library systems among private universities in Bangladesh. I encourage students to make the most of these resources.”

Pro Vice-Chancellor Dr. Daniel W. Rand said, “Libraries are important places…Our first encounters in Canada were in federally funded community libraries. From an early age, we learned to borrow books, use the Dewey Decimal System, and navigate libraries. Libraries are places where knowledge is free and the foundation of our future.”

In his welcome address, IUB Librarian Shahajada Masood Anowalul Haq said, “National Library Day emphasizes that libraries are more than just places to store books. Libraries are spaces where ideas grow, curiosity is nurtured, and knowledge empowers society. Our goal is not only to provide information, but also to help students and faculty navigate these resources effectively and responsibly. We are also proud to be a full member of the International Federation of Library Associations.” (IFLA). ”

The program concluded with closing remarks by Deputy Librarian Khurshid Jahan, followed by cake cutting and lunch.
