ITN will use OpenOrigins technology to verify all items in the archive and secure them on the blockchain.
ITN has signed a contract with OpenOrigins to protect the archives from synthetic media (also known as artificial intelligence).
The deal will see the news organization preserve more than one million video clips collected by ITN since its founding in 1955.
ITN will use OpenOrigins' technology to verify and secure every item in the archive on the blockchain, ensuring immutable provenance and proof of originality for all future and past ITN content, the company says.
OpenOrigins' technology creates a “fingerprint” of each piece of content that is securely stored as a hash on the blockchain, proving that the content is original and authentic from the start, rather than relying on retroactive verification of the footage.
“The ITN Archive is a unique repository of more than 70 years of British cultural history and we're delighted to be able to use new technology to help protect this priceless asset,” said Tami Hoffman, ITN's director of news distribution and commercial innovation.
“As the information ecosystem becomes more polluted with synthetic material, news organizations must work hard to maintain their audience's trust. By partnering with OpenOrigins, ITN can protect its archives from future threats and give peace of mind to its viewers and customers.”
