Is a decrease in AI maturity a sign of progress?

AI For Business

At first glance, the central discoveries in the research into the newly released ServiceNow and Oxford Economics 2025 Enterprise AI Maturity Index are surprising. On the 100-point scale, the average AI maturity score has decreased by 9 points from last year. Is it possible that AI has been so focused, focused and invested, that companies have fallen behind?

The reasons are relevant, but I'm telling them. AI moves overwhelmingly faster than most organizations can keep up. In 2022, Openai introduced the world to Generate AI. By 2024-2025, AI agents have taken over the spotlight. Currently, Agent AI is a new rage. At the same time, AI complexity is combined with unproven pilot uncertainty and inherent limitations of basic use cases, restricting businesses around the world. Naturally, they are more modest and move with caution.

Other leaders see uncertainty as a catalyst for finding answers and opportunities for curiosity, exploration and imagination. The group has the motivation to speed up, challenge their assumptions and explore bolder and more ambitious pilots who move the needle. In doing so, they broaden their perspective and force the ability to uncover more influential AI use cases and outcomes. ServiceNow calls these progressive leaders, AI Pacesetters.
