SK Hynix, which has a strong foundation of competitiveness in AI memory, has decided to establish AI Company as a specialized organization that views AI technology and the market from multiple angles and promotes actions.
AI companies drive AI investments and commercialization of solutions
The global AI industry is currently centered in the United States, and new technologies and companies are rapidly emerging from the region. The market is also witnessing the rise of integrated AI solutions that combine hardware, software, and services, as well as standalone products. The investment and business efforts through AI Company are ultimately aimed at strengthening the competitiveness of Korea’s AI industry. SK Hynix will explore the potential of the domestic AI ecosystem and strive to expand relationships between global AI leaders and domestic companies.

Q1. How is the funding for establishing AI Company raised?
A. To secure initial funding, we have decided to invest $10 billion. However, the $10 billion will be structured as a capital call reserve, and funds will be deployed as investment funds at AI’s request. SK Hynix’s fundamentals are sufficient to make this investment possible, and it will be flexibly implemented depending on the situation.
Q2. How is an AI company established?
A. SK Hynix will reorganize its California-based enterprise SSD manufacturing subsidiary Solidigm (SK Hynix NAND Product Solutions) and establish an AI company.
During this process, Solidigm will continue to exist as AI Co. and transfer business operations to a new subsidiary (Solidigm Inc.) to ensure brand continuity.
AI Co. will function as an AI-focused business division and advance SK Hynix’s AI strategy. AI’s name will be officially announced later this year.
Q3. Why was Solidigm brought under your umbrella?
A. Solidigm is already a major player in the AI data center ecosystem with its eSSD business. By placing Solidigm under the umbrella of an AI company, we would like to explore collaborations and business opportunities that can create synergies with various business areas within the AI industry.
Q4. When will the official name of AI Company be decided?
A. It will be announced at the time of release in February. The company will start with an interim management team and board of directors, then transition to a permanent management group comprised of local experts familiar with the U.S. market.
Q5. What specific technology areas do you plan to invest in? Are there any overlaps with SK Hynix’s in-house R&D?
A. To ensure diverse AI solution capabilities beyond our existing infrastructure, we plan to initially focus on SW for AI system-level optimization, and then gradually expand our investments within the AI data center ecosystem.
