Answers to ALS: Turn data into discovery

The organization collaborated with Microsoft to build Neuromine, one of the world’s largest ALS research hubs, integrating trillions of data points provided by more than 2,500 people living with ALS. Azure AI Search powers Neuromine’s query capabilities so researchers can quickly learn more about an individual’s disease history and DNA, helping them pinpoint cell lines for further study.
Additionally, Answer ALS is developing a chatbot at Microsoft Foundry that uses generative AI to answer user questions and direct researchers to relevant data. Before Neuromine, researchers often needed months, or even more than a year, to collect data and biological samples before starting meaningful analysis. Researchers around the world now have access to hundreds of patient lines and associated clinical data in hours instead of months, helping them move from question to insight faster.
By making it easier to explore, share, and build on high-quality research data, Answer ALS will help accelerate research by up to 65% over the next few years. The platform will enable researchers around the world to collaborate more effectively, discover new patterns in data, and advance the search for better treatments and, ultimately, cures.
Everything Suarve: Expanding second chances with AI
Everything Suarve helps young Australians rebuild their lives through vocational training, mentorship, mental health support and practical life skills. Many of our participants arrive after facing challenges such as housing insecurity, unstable home situations, and trauma. For small teams, the job comes down to trust, consistency, and whether young people show up when they need support the most.
As demand for the program increased, so did the administrative burden. Referrals came through email, paper forms, and phone calls, and staff tracked participants’ progress across unconnected systems. To streamline operations, Everything Suarve used Microsoft data and AI capabilities to build a solution that centralizes enrollment, case management, reporting, and communications. The organization also uses Microsoft 365 Copilot to help with grant writing, document summarization, and other administrative tasks, reducing time spent on manual tasks.
Now, Everything Suarve staff can manage referrals, case notes, reports, and participant communications in a single workflow. The new platform saves up to eight hours per participant during registration, and Copilot reduces grant application work by up to two weeks. By automating processes and putting AI to work, Everything Suarve reduces administrative overhead and gives young people more time to help them build confidence, skills and progress towards employment, education and long-term stability.
