Indonesia also allowed Elon Musk’s Grok chatbot to resume service, shortly after Malaysia and the Philippines allowed its use in their countries, and lifted a ban on sexual images on the app after Company X worked to improve compliance with the country’s laws, according to a government statement.
Indonesia suspended Grok’s operations in the Southeast Asian country three weeks ago, citing the risks of AI-generated pornographic content, becoming the first country to deny it access to the AI tool.
As reported by Reuters, the Ministry of Communications and Digital said in a statement on Sunday that the government was handling the resumption of access “conditionally and under strict supervision.”
Governments and regulators from Europe to Asia have condemned the sexual content Grok produces, and some have launched investigations.
“The normalization of access to Grok services is conditional after Company X has submitted a written commitment containing concrete measures to improve the service and prevent fraud. This commitment is the basis of the evaluation and not the end of the supervisory process,” Alexander Savard, a senior ministry official, said in a statement.
He added that X has implemented a number of “multi-layered” measures to combat abuse of Grok services, and these will be continually verified.
Tech experts expect more countries to lift their bans on Grok soon after the platform ensures regulatory safeguards regarding sensitive and explicit content.
