AI Video & Visuals

In a striking reflection of the evolving entertainment landscape of the digital age, Indian YouTube channel Bandar Apna Dost has emerged as the most-watched AI-generated content channel in the world, according to a new study by video editing platform Kapwing.

The channel, which features bizarre animated shorts featuring Hulk-like muscular figures and anthropomorphic monkeys in absurd and often slapstick dramatic situations, generates an estimated annual income of US$4.25 million (S$5.45 million).

It has been viewed by more than 2.07 billion people and has more than 2.78 million subscribers, making it a top performer among what researchers call “AI slop” content.

Kapwing's report analyzed 15,000 popular YouTube channels and found that 278 of them publish only AI-generated videos with minimal human oversight.

These channels often lack a consistent storyline or rich animation, and are designed to maximize algorithmic engagement rather than telling meaningful stories. Together they have more than 63 billion views and 221 million subscribers.

Despite their low production value, these videos make up the majority of YouTube's recommendation algorithm.

The study found that more than 20 percent of the content recommended to new users falls into this AI-generated category, raising questions about platforms prioritizing engagement over creativity.

Bandar Apna Dost has come to symbolize the global potential of AI-generated content.

According to Rohini Lakshane, a technology and digital rights researcher, the channel's success can be attributed to its “accessible absurdity” and lack of plot, which allows viewers to engage at any time without context.

Its hyper-masculine visuals and no-nonsense humor resonate with a wide range of audiences, especially children and non-English speakers.
