IISc Bangalore opens registration for deep learning and AI courses

Machine Learning

This course will run from January 19th to April 10th, 2026. It will be taught by Prof. Sriram Ganapathy, Prof. Ashwini Kodipalli and Prof. Vaishali Garai from IISc Bangalore.

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, in partnership with SWAYAM, has started registration for free online courses on deep learning. This course is titled “Fundamentals of Deep Learning.” Concepts and Applications is aimed at undergraduate and graduate students and does not require any prior knowledge of the subject. It starts with basic questions that beginners often have, such as the difference between deep learning and machine learning, and moves on to topics such as gradient descent, backpropagation, convolutional neural networks, and weekly practical tasks.

This course will run from January 19th to April 10th, 2026. It will be taught by Prof. Sriram Ganapathy, Prof. Ashwini Kodipalli and Prof. Vaishali Garai from IISc Bangalore. No prior background is required, but a basic knowledge of Python will help learners understand the concepts more easily.

Course content

• History and growth of deep learning with a focus on computational efficiency
• Fundamentals of image representation, preprocessing, and data augmentation.
• Practical work on building CNN models for binary and multiclass classification.
• Exercises on transfer learning and ensemble model creation
• Overview of XAI and how the algorithm works
• How to evaluate segmentation and CNN-based segmentation such as UNet.
• Overview of LSTM, bidirectional LSTM, and stacked LSTM
• Transformer models, large language models, and related concepts.

course certificate

Learners seeking a certificate must register for the exam by April 25, 2026. The exam will be held in two sessions. From 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The exam fee is Rs 1,000 and will be conducted under supervision at designated centers.
