Anthropic is challenging reports of federal regulations on the use of its AI systems following the Department of Defense’s supply chain risk classification.
US AI company Anthropic sought to challenge the US Department of Defense’s decision to ban the use of its technology in government agencies. The company had 30 days to appeal after the Pentagon classified its products as a “supply chain risk.”
However, instead of following the proper procedure and sending the appeal to the designated official address, the head of Anthropic’s legal team emailed it directly to two DoW officials.
Reports cited by multiple media outlets suggest that there are disagreements between humanity and U.S. defense officials over potential military applications of AI systems and related safety restrictions. The report addresses discussions regarding military and intelligence-related AI applications. Anthropic was classified as a “supply chain risk” after the Department of Defense asked Anthropic to change its rules, but the company refused.
The designation is reportedly an unusual move involving a major US AI company. Federal agencies were reportedly directed to suspend the use of artificial technology following the classification decision.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said the company previously worked with the U.S. military in areas such as intelligence analysis, modeling and simulation, operational planning, and cyber operations. But he also argued that the government’s action was not legally justified and said the company had no choice but to challenge it in court.
Amodei went on to say that Anthropic believes private companies should not be involved in military operational decision-making, especially when the systems enable fully autonomous weapons or mass surveillance.
