Examining the rapid rise of artificial intelligence, the global experts at the Dubai Summit are urging future generations not to lose sight of the value of common sense when leveraging advanced technology and not to be afraid to fail.
Professor Henrik Von Scheel, co-founder of Strategic Intelligence, which provides future trend reports to the World Economic Forum, noted the excessive reliance on AI at Futurists X Summit on Monday.
Large-scale language models like ChatGpt measure young people making answers easier in seconds, but there is concern among educators and experts that AI tools can limit critical thinking and avoid risks for users.
Professor Von Scheel explained this by highlighting how important it is to acknowledge failure in the learning process, but the option to answer questions using AI tools can remove the risk of being wrong.
“My obsessions lie with every student of mine. You have to fail… If you don't fail, you won't learn,” said Professor Von Shiel, professor emeritus at the Arthur Lok Jack Global Business School in Trinidad and Tobago.
“The industry recognizes me, but what they don't see is the failed attempts that came before that, because the success I learned from those failures.”
Add a human touch
Other experts at the summit said there is a need to balance AI tools and human judgment. Johan Gerber, Vice President of Security Solutions at MasterCard, said that human common sense can help you stay ahead of AI.
He cited the case of Soviet Lieutenant Colonel Stanislav Petrov, who was recognized in 1983 for preventing a potential nuclear conflict.
“That sense-making component is where we are always in our advantage as humans,” Gerber said. “Even if the data says something specific, the common sense parts and contextual information may actually be our savior.”
He said that when AI provides data, he firmly believes in “human-aged intelligence,” but it is the person who interprets it. He also touched on cybersecurity, saying that AI is driving threats and opportunities in this area.
“There's a concept of a red team and a blue team. The red team is the team that's trying to attack you, and the blue team is trying to protect you.
“And there are several platforms that host red team competitions, where people are allowed to “attack and attack me as a company.” Then they try to find their defenses and weaknesses… and people pay for it. ”
Quantum computing challenges
The Summit also focuses on quantum computing. A technology that can crunch large datasets at high speed and potentially provide breakthroughs in fields such as medicine, cybersecurity, and astrophysics.
Steve Suarez, founder and CEO of Horizonx Consulting, said US authorities are already developing new algorithms to protect against the risks posed by quantum computers.
He said that if these machines are strong enough, they can break today's common encryption methods to protect sensitive data such as bank accounts and government records. “It's not… it's a matter of whether it's already theoretically presented,” Suarez said.
He warns that hackers have already saved stolen data and hopes that Quantum Technology will unlock when it gets strong enough. He said quantum computing could soon become mainstream, perhaps within the next decade.
“Quantum is like a marathon. You can't show up that day and start running. You need to prepare in advance. This is a technique you don't want to be left behind,” he said.
Unlock space computing power
Brian Cox, a professor of particle physics at the University of Manchester, spoke to the Summit about quantum systems pros, including how to harness “the basic forces of nature itself.”
“According to our modern physics photographs, it's a calming accounting issue,” he said. “Quantum computers can access very small parts of their power, but they are sufficient to perform calculations at moments that take longer than the present in the universe to perform them using a classic computer that can be thought of.
