The fact that Google has made it the default keyboard for Pixel devices has made Gboard the staple keyboard for the Android community. Just like any other Google app – look at you, Google Messages – Gboard offers a lot and is being noticed to expand what Google can do. One of the latest features added by the company is that you can get your mobile phone AI to help you write texts. This feature was previously only available on Pixel devices, but with the latest Pixel feature drops, it is beginning to be deployed on more Android devices.
To take advantage of the new features, you must run the latest version of Gboard. Still, it may take days or weeks to deploy to your device. At the time of writing, I haven't received the feature yet on the Galaxy S25 Ultra, but others have already seen it on the OnePlus 13. However, you can use Gboard's AI writing tool to spell text and generate a new version of your message.
Plus, according to Google, all processing is done on your device using Gemini Nano, so you don't have to worry about privacy. Of course, that doesn't stop people from wondering what data Gemini has access to your message.
How to use Gboard's AI writing tool
To get started with Gboard's AI lighting tools, launch an app that supports Gboard, then look for the lighting tool icon. Tap again to open the AI writing window and it will immediately begin offering suggestions for text field messages.
From there, you can choose the different styles you want to use for your AI. There is also the option to paraphrase and proofread the text. So you can make sure your message does not contain any spelling or grammar issues. Other keyboards offer similar functionality, but if you're already using Google keyboards now, you can find them directly on Gboard.
You can also edit and delete a message after sending it to some apps, but not all apps allow that option, so it's useful to have another way to check your work before sending a message to a contact. That said, it is worth noting that AI writing tools are only available on devices running Gemini Nano V2 or higher.
