How to turn off Meta AI: Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp

Applications of AI

Meta (formerly Facebook) is enhancing the use of artificial intelligence across platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. The company collects data from user activity and trains AI models, driving everything from content recommendations and targeted ads to generation tools. However, this expansion has led to increased concerns about how personal data is being used, particularly with the expansion into more privacy-oriented regions like the EU.

From posts you share to tagged photos, Meta uses this information to supply AI. It also does not sell data directly, but it uses it to improve its algorithms, share insights with third parties, and raises serious privacy flags.

If you want to regain some control, here are some ways to reduce access to Meta AI data and what the options are:

Meta collects a large amount of data through user interaction, including likes, comments, shares, and posts. This data is used to improve services such as content recommendations, targeted ads, and train AI models designed to create new content based on user behavior. Meta does not sell personal data directly, but it shares information with third parties and uses it to improve algorithms and raises privacy concerns.

As of May 27, 2025, EU users are able I no longer turn off Meta AI Read from the data and prevent it from being learned.

New: Facebook Camera Roll Cloud Processing

Facebook has a new AI feature that raises your eyebrows: Camera Roll Cloud Processing. This setting allows you to meta access to private photos that you haven't shared, including those you haven't shared, by uploading them from your device to the MetaServer.

If turned on, Meta will periodically scan the latest photos and videos from your phone's camera roll (usually from the last 30 days) and can use:

  • Suggest content to share
  • Use AI to auto-edit or rethink photos
  • Create theme compilations such as monthly summaries and birthday highlights

According to Meta, the feature is opt-in and aims to provide “creative suggestions” unless you decide to share it. Meta says these photos will not be used for AD targeting or AI model training during the test phase. However, unless you manually turn off the feature, the content will be stored in the cloud for 30 days.

This option is currently only available through the US and Canada Facebook mobile apps. It is not available to users in Illinois or Texas.

How to turn on or off AI Camera Roll Cloud Processing

To check if this setting is active or turn it off:

  • Open the Facebook app and tap the menu in the bottom right corner.
  • Tap the gear icon in the top right or scroll to Settings & Privacy > Settings.
  • Tap Camera Roll Sharing Suggestions.
  • Scroll to Get creative ideas by allowing camera roll cloud processing.

If the toggle is gray, it is off. If it's blue, it's on. Tap the toggle toggle on or off.

If you disable the settings after it is turned on, Meta says that the photo will be removed from the cloud in 30 days. However, there is no confirmation message. The only way to confirm deletion is to download the entire Facebook data archive.

If you want to restrict meta access to your Facebook or Instagram data, here's what you need.

1. Facebook:

To manage your data sharing settings on Facebook and restrict access to AI information, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Facebook app or visit the desktop website.
  2. I'm going Settings and privacy > Privacy Centre.
  3. Scroll down Privacy sheet pick Select Meta's ai.
  4. click Submit a request for objection. You can find the objection request link here.
  5. Enter the email address associated with your profile and provide details about how the processing of your information will affect it.
  6. strike submit.

Plus, Facebook offers a Data subject rights for third party information used for AI in meta You can find it here. This option allows users to request that Meta not use personal information obtained from third-party sources (for example, published data, license information, etc.) for AI training. This is useful when protecting data that is not directly tied to a meta account but may be used for AI purposes. However, you must provide specific examples of personal data used by AI.

2. Instagram:

Instagram users can follow similar steps to opt out of data collection for AI training.

  1. Open the Instagram app.
  2. I'm going Settings and activities > Privacy Centre.
  3. Select Meta's ai Click Submit a request for objection.
  4. Enter the email address associated with your profile and explain how your data usage will affect you.
  5. Please submit your request.

By following these steps, you can officially lodge objections to Meta using data for AI training.

3. WhatsApp: No Opt-Out Option

Unfortunately, WhatsApp users no longer have the option to opt out of Meta's AI data collection. Previously there was a toggle that turned off AI features, but Meta removed this option.

You can't block meta AI completely, but you can Reduce its presence:

  • Mute AI Chat: Long press of chat and taps generated by AI mute.
  • Avoid AI functions: Do not involve any suggested responses, automated compounding, or AI chat.

It is important to avoid attempting to bypass this system using an older version of WhatsApp. This can be subject to security risks.

Understand the differences in the opt-out process

There are two main ways to use data to oppose the meta in AI training. Data rights for third party information and Objects to information used by AI. How do these differ:

Data subject rights for third party information used for AI in meta

  • the purpose: Users can request that Meta not use personal information from third-party sources (such as commonly available data, license information, etc.) for AI purposes.
  • Data Type: Covers personal data from external sources that are not necessarily linked to meta accounts.
  • process: Users should provide AI with specific examples (eg, screenshots) showing personal data for responses generated.
  • result: META may take actions on certain instances of personal data that appear in AI responses.
  • Applicability: Available worldwide, including those who do not use meta products.

Objects in information used by AI in meta

  • the purpose: Because Meta product users (Facebook and Instagram) oppose Meta using public content (posts, photos, comments) and AI chat data for AI training.
  • Data Type: Covers public information from your Meta account and interactions with Meta AI.
  • process: An email address is required, and optionally an explanation of how data processing will affect it.
  • result: Meta will not use data for future AI development, but content shared by others may still be used.
  • Applicability: Mainly for Facebook and Instagram users.

It is important to note that even if you are not actively posting content to the meta platform, your data can still be included in AI training. If it is tagged with a photo or mentioned in someone else's post, that data can be used in Meta's AI system. So simply not posting content is not sufficient to guarantee privacy.

While it's difficult to completely opt out of Meta's AI training, you can better protect your privacy by understanding how you use your data and taking steps to limit your collection.

If you're worried about data being used for AI training, adjust your settings on Facebook and Instagram to take action. Unfortunately, WhatsApp users have fewer options with the removal of the AI opt-out feature. By becoming proactive, you can minimize the impact of Meta's AI data collection on individual privacy.
