If we want to develop human intelligence, we cannot make our students dependent on artificial intelligence.
Generative AI will transform the world, even if no one is sure what the final product will look like. These are artificial intelligence programs that create new content based on prompts and questions submitted by users.
You can imagine how much trouble this causes for schools and teachers. Programs like ChatGPT can solve your students' most difficult math problems and spit out a report in seconds.
Some educational institutions believe that teaching students how to incorporate AI into their learning is the best path forward. In Nevada, school districts including Las Vegas have begun testing AI in the classroom. In April, President Donald Trump issued an executive order “promoting the appropriate integration of AI in education.” In 2024, more than a quarter of teens said they had used ChatGPT for homework.
While the use of AI in education can be beneficial, there are real dangers here.
Education has two main purposes. The first is to provide moral guidance. The second is to train students to think.
Think about this. Imagine your son is lost in the woods, miles from safety. First he needs to know where to go. That is the moral compass. Secondly, he needs to know how to hike and overcome obstacles on the way. That is intellectual training.
