Google doesn’t reveal usage limits for the free tier, only describing them as “standard.” The AI Plus plan doubles these “standard” limits, and the AI Pro plan quadruples them. AI Ultra limits are either 5x or 20x the AI Pro limits, depending on your payment level.
All users have access to all Gemini AI models, including Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro. As you progress through these models, they become smarter and use more. Each model has a different level of “thinking”.standard, expandedand think deeply— Also affects response quality, speed, and usage limits.
The final difference between these models is the size of the context window. Basically, this tells you how much information can be included in one conversation thread. For free users, the context window is 32K tokens (small chunks of text), or approximately 24,000 words. For AI Plus users, the limit is 128,000 tokens (approximately 96,000 words), and for AI Pro and Ultra users, the limit is 1 million tokens (approximately 750,000 words).
Check AI usage
The new rules for using AI may be lacking in detail, but at least it’s easy enough to check your status. In the Gemini app on the web, click the gear icon (bottom left) Usage restrictions; In the Android or iOS mobile app, tap the Menu button (top left), tap the gear, then tap Usage restrictions.
Two bars will appear. The top bar shows your current usage and resets every 5 hours. If you do this, you will have to wait until it comes back. The Gemini app will notify you of the next reset time.
The second bar is the weekly limit, which, as you might have guessed, resets every week. (This will also be displayed on screen.) If you reach these limits and are on a paid plan, you will be demoted to the most basic AI model, which you can continue to use until the next reset.
Inevitably, you’ll see an offer to upgrade your AI plan on the usage limits screen. It’s also worth bearing in mind that Google’s support document states that limits are subject to change without notice due to capacity constraints, and free users may be affected first if Google needs to manage its AI resources.
